New Zealand Won World Cup – It’s the biggest women’s rugby game ever, and somehow it even beats the box office by that much. New Zealand are the winners of the Rugby World Cup, but only after a pretty amazing match that proved why the tournament has captured the imagination of so many. England will feel a sense of loss, but they played their part in perhaps the best World Cup final in history.

It’s also Red Rose’s worst nightmare. It was the Black Ferns’ second successive World Cup final defeat and their first defeat to any team in 31 test matches. They jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but were left behind after winger Lydia Thompson was shown a red card for a high challenge on standout Portia Woodman. The number was reduced to 14 men. In that moment of misjudgment, everything changed.

Yet even in the final moments, the final shot of redemption remains. After the England team won a penalty, they chose to take the final line-up five meters away. Their driving force has been almost unstoppable for weeks and the stage is set. However, when it mattered most, the ball ended up in the hands of the grateful New Zealanders and the defending champions were safe.

Given that England have enjoyed a full-time deal longer than some of their rivals, it must also rank as one of the biggest coaching heists. When Wayne Smith took over earlier this year, the Black Ferns were in disarray after a thorough review of the treatment of players from the previous regime. Smith just told his players to go out and play freely and happily. The rest is history.

The women’s race saw a world record crowd of 42,579 spectators, adding further resonance to this all-encompassing event. Neither side deserved to lose the game, but New Zealand’s sixth shot with eight minutes left came from substitute winger Ayesha Leti-I’iga, who scored in the center Stacey To score a goal from a world-class pass from Stacey Fluhler is something special.

It comes down to a classic clash of styles, especially since Thompson is gone. England’s kicks and headers were excellent on most occasions, with hooker Amy Cokayne scoring a hat-trick from close range, but the Black Ferns defenders were also a constant threat. There were some thorny issues to iron out even before kick-off, with starting half-back Leanne Infante ruled out with knee and ankle problems on the eve of the game. In came the relatively inexperienced Lucy Packer, who had only made eight previous appearances for the team, but it was the most important game of her young life.

However, the Red Roses got off to a perfect start and responded with a clever hack that spread along the 10-metre line from the white wall. Less than three minutes into the game, an effective counter-attack saw them create space down the wing and full-back Ellie Kildoon calmly fired home from the corner. Even more ominously, England’s famous Moore began to roar, and Cockayne completed a perfect score within a few minutes to make the score 14-0.

However, when New Zealand attacked from the left, Thompson smacked the hapless Hacker square in the face and her rejection was unquestionable. It was a particularly sad exit for Woodman, one of the female group’s breakout stars, but it also presented an opportunity for New Zealand to change the musical climate.

Sure enough, they got their first try on the board almost immediately through Georgia Ponsonby, before Woodman’s successor Leti-I’iga closed the gap even further. Under the leadership of Smith and his former All Black masters Sir Graham Henry and Mike Crone, the Black Ferns lived up to their promise and tried.

However, England maintained their advantage through Mary Parker and the tenacious Cockayne, but the early loss of Zoe Aldercroft continued to worry. Can New Zealand respond again? The answer was yes as Amy Rule scored from close range again to reduce the half time gap to one point again.

An exciting break came to an end within 30 seconds of the restart, with Fleurer running a perfect support line to complete a try that would add to the glory of the final. Then, within four minutes of coming on, substitute front rower Krystal Murray crashed into the left corner to give her side the lead for the first time. Their advantage did not last long as another strike gave Cockayne the opportunity to complete his hat-trick, but the best was yet to come.

Referee Holly Davidson also deserves great praise. Whatever the outcome, this game felt like the women’s game had come of age in more ways than one, whether in New Zealand or further afield.
