However, a turning point in the history of the sport occurred on 5 January 1971 when the first One Day International (ODI) was played between England and Australia in Melbourne.

Two years later, the International Cricket Council (ICC), then known as the International Cricket Conference, planned to host the 1975 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
