India spring big surprise in ICC World Cup 2023 squad, decide not to name any standby or reserve players

India avoided naming standby or reserve players, a common practice for multinational tournaments and ICC events for the upcoming World Cup at home.

India’s ICC World Cup 2023 squad was announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma at a press conference in Kandy on Tuesday. Sounds confusing? Let’s make it clear. There are no surprises in the 15-man squad, or in other words, the main squad. Another fit brings KL Rahul back to the side. Ishan Kishan was picked as the backup opener and keeper while Surya Kumar Yadav tapped Sanju Samson for the backup middle-order batsman spot.
For Siam’s bowling options, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Mohammad Siraj and Shardul Thakur have picked themselves, as have all-rounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna, Ravichandran Ashwin, Tilak Verma and Samson were notable outings. However, Ashwin and Chahal were not part of the Asia Cup, Samson was a reserve and Krishna and Tilak were selected only because the ACC allowed teams to name a 17-man squad. So where’s the surprise?
This is in the absence of storage in the name. India have refrained from naming standby or reserve players, a common practice for domestic tournaments and ICC events, for the upcoming World Cup at home which starts on October 5.
Since the ICC does not allow more than 15 players in the main squad, most teams name at least three reserve players. They are usually preferred when a replacement is selected if someone is injured in the main squad. But it is clear that India does not want to limit them to just three or four names. Since the World Cup will be held at home, they obviously have the opportunity to replace any player.
When Will India Play Against Sri Lanka And Netherlands In ICC World Cup 2023?
When asked about this, chief selector Agarkar pointed out that if anyone from the core squad is injured, the reserves are among those who are currently in Sri Lanka but are missing out on a World Cup berth. Namely Samson, Taluk and Krishna. “There are 17 guys, KL is 18th, so, if you want that cover, those three guys, whether it’s for the keeper, the extra seamer or the batter. Tilak was also with us. These are the best 15 we have. You don’t change it unless you have injuries,” he said.
Interestingly, the ICC does not make it mandatory for teams to name reserve players. It’s a practice teams have commonly followed over the past few years to prepare for injury concerns. In the last ODI World Cup, India named Rishabh Pant, Ambati Rayudu and Navdeep Saini as official standby players.
India will be allowed to choose alternatives. The fact that they don’t name the reservoirs has no effect. In fact, not naming the reserve players only widens India’s horizons. Among the three players named by Agrakar, India covers all the bases, except in the Spain department. Kuldeep Yadav is the tall specialist spinner with all-rounders Jadeja and Aksar as other options. The likes of Chahal, and Ashwin are in line if Kuldeep gets injured midway through the tournament.

India National Cricket Team 2023 World Cup Squad
This is the latest cricket schedule that has seen India’s failed T20 World Cup campaign in review, and a big tournament is on their doorstep: a 50-over World Cup on home soil in October and November next year. India are not yet officially on track for the 2023 ODI World Cup as they currently do not have national selectors, who will decide the direction of the team, in consultation with the team management. However, 3 of the 21 ODIs are scheduled before the World Cup begins this Friday in New Zealand, and the 50-over format needs urgent attention after three years of being the No. 3 on the priority list. India have played just 39. Since the 2019 World Cup, and due to injuries or workload management, only six players have played 20 or more ODIs. Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Yuzvinder Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja scored 18 each, Jasprit Bumrah 14 and Hardik Pandya 12. India tested 44 players during this period, suffice it to say that India are yet to score zero. They want to take a strong team to the World Cup. And, in the meantime, many new options have appeared. Soon we will get a clear picture of which side the team is on, but it will not be easy for the selectors. Here’s a look at the 15 spots in the World Cup squad. The top-order top-three has traditionally been India’s strength in ODIs but, like the T20Is, there has been debate over whether India need to be more dynamic. They have worked hard for it in the last three years, showing that India are the second fastest team on the power play, only behind England. Here’s the thing though: across the trio of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli in 11 matches, India’s powerplay run rate has dropped from 5.41 to 4.97. In the coming months, India will have to sort out both. The crew and the tempo where they want to go. With that in mind, here are the candidates for the top order. Below are the numbers for the batsmen from the 2019 ODI World Cup, in that particular role. Shikhar Dhawan has played more ODIs than anyone else with innings – 29, runs – 1192, average – 46, strike rate – 83. India seems to have set him up as the top left arm option. Rohit Sharma I 17, R 718, A 45, SR 96 The all-time ODI great, as well as the captain, will now get a series of matches under his belt. After focusing on T20Is for the last three years. Virat Kohli I 24, R 1042, A 45, SR 91 Again a good one, on form today, and will look to get back into the ODI rhythm. Shubman Gul I. 10, R 563, A 70, SR 106 Kohli’s heir apparent, but it is impossible to see past even Kohli’s existence. Keep others on their toes. Others: Prithvi Shaw and Ishaan Kishan
Middle-order India will not want a repeat of the 2019 World Cup, where they ended up with an untested middle-order appearing early in the semi-finals. The options have been tried for three years with impressive results from Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. Hardik Pandya will be a show-in, especially if he gives India five overs in every match. Here are the candidates for the middle order in more detail. KL Rahul I 11, R 603, A 67, SR 109 himself opened the 2019 World Cup due to injuries. He has played 22 matches so far, 10 in the top order with mediocre results. In the middle order, Rahul has been outstanding. Shreyas Iyer I 22, R 928, A 49, SR 99 On the one hand, he has shown himself capable of batting long and batting quickly. Spinners are not allowed to settle in the middle overs. Rishabh Pant I 15, R 613, A 44, SR 114 earned himself playing time in T20s. Once he did, dangerous left-arm batsman Hardik Pandya I 10, R 429, A 48, SR 116 presented himself well.
